# Manage document metadata

## Open document metadata informations

For each document, it is possible to manage its metadata. This is particularly important for [manually added documents](/docs/getting-started/add-your-documents/manually-add-documents.md) to ensure proper citation and Zotero export.

To manage a document's metadata, navigate to the document and select the "\</>" icon in the "Database" section. A new window will open, allowing you to edit all the document's metadata. This window is divided into three sections:

### Document information

In this section you can edit the document type. The document type determines the available metadata fields and the citation format to be used (e.g., article, book, book chapter, etc.).

### Metadata providers

Revstack can retrieve metadata from providers like PubMed or CrossRef. However, specific metadata must be provided to enable these services:

* **PubMed**: PMID or PMCID
* **CrossRef**: DOI

To manually add metadata, click the "+" button. A pop-up window will open, allowing you to specify the metadata type and its value. Click on "Add the metadata" to save the new entry. Once PMID, PMCID, or DOI are defined, you will be able to use a metadata provider.

If you cannot find the metadata type you need, check the document type settings.
{% endhint %}

### Metadata table

The last section of the window displays all the document's metadata. You can individually edit or delete each metadata entry using the action buttons.
